Professional cyclists debate ban on radio earpieces

Professional cyclists are divided over the use of radio earpieces during World and European Championships, where communication with team directors is prohibited. This rule forces riders to rely more on instinct and intuition during races.

Wout van Aert has criticized the ban, arguing that professional athletes should be allowed to use the technology they are accustomed to. Conversely, Mathieu van der Poel supports the restriction, stating that racing without earpieces leads to more exciting competitions driven by instinct.

The debate also involves safety concerns. While the UCI has expressed fears that radio communication turns riders into pawns of team directors, riders and teams argue that earpieces are vital for safety, providing quick warnings during dangerous descents or after crashes. Former rider Philippe Gilbert has suggested a compromise, such as allowing only one or two designated captains per team to use radios during a race.
