Professional expenses that can reduce tax burden
Employees can reduce their tax burden by claiming various professional expenses as deductible income-related costs. According to experts from the Bund der Steuerzahler, these expenses must be directly related to one's profession.
Key deductible items include costs for professional development such as seminars, workshops, courses, exams, specialist books, and necessary work equipment. If training occurs in a different location, travel, accommodation, and meal allowances may also be eligible. Language courses can be claimed if they have a specific professional connection.
Costs associated with job searching, such as application photos, folders, copies, postage, and travel expenses for interviews, are also deductible, regardless of whether the application is successful. Additionally, certain relocation costs—including moving companies, travel, or double rent payments—may be considered if the move is necessitated by a new job or transfer. However, expenses reimbursed by an employer cannot be claimed again on a tax return.
