Professional sports owners face scrutiny over cost-cutting measures

A report examines cost-cutting behaviors among billionaire owners in professional sports. Tom Dundon, owner of the Carolina Hurricanes and recent purchaser of the Portland Trail Blazers for approximately $4.25 billion, has implemented significant austerity measures. These include laying off 70 employees, reducing travel expenses, and overhauling broadcast crews.

Other notable examples include Bob Nutting of the Pittsburgh Pirates, whose team has frequently ranked in the bottom five for Opening Day payroll. Despite a franchise value of $1.62 billion, the Pirates' 2025 payroll was $86.5 million, prompting MLB to investigate how revenue-sharing funds are being reinvested. Additionally, the Glazer family of Manchester United is highlighted for their 2005 leveraged buyout, which left the club with debt exceeding £700 million.
