Professional Tennis Players Association warns of rising injury risks

The Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA) has raised concerns regarding player health following numerous high-profile withdrawals from the Canadian Open. The association argues that an increasingly long professional calendar and expanded tournament formats are contributing to rising injury risks and reduced recovery times.

Major players sidelined from the Canadian Open include Jannik Sinner, Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, and Felix Auger-Aliassime. On the women's side, players such as Emma Raducanu, Karolina Muchova, and Jasmine Paolini have also withdrawn due to injury.

According to PTPA data analysis, upper-body injuries rose by 42% in the first quarter of 2026 compared to the previous year, while arm injuries increased by 112% relative to the 2025 average. The PTPA attributes these trends to the ATP's OneVision strategic plan, which expanded several Masters 1000 tournaments to 12-day events, thereby limiting the time available for players to rest and travel.
