Professor at Kolkata college alleges forced resignation

Mohammadi Tarannum, the vice principal and teacher in charge at Surendranath College in Kolkata, has alleged that she was forced to sign a resignation letter following an attendance dispute. Tarannum claims that students confined her to her office for nearly 23 hours on September 11, during which she was subjected to abusive remarks regarding her religion, caste, and politics.

The conflict reportedly stems from the enforcement of a mandatory 65% attendance rule required for law students to sit for semester examinations. Following the incident, members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) entered Tarannum’s office to perform a “purification” ritual involving incense sticks and Ganga water.

While Tarannum has publicly rejected the resignation, stating she signed it under extreme pressure, some participating students have denied that any coercion took place. The vice principal was eventually escorted from the college premises by police.
