Professor David Criekemans to discuss European geopolitics in Moorsel
Professor of International Politics David Criekemans from the University of Antwerp will present his new book, ‘Hyperrealism: Europe in a New Geopolitical Era’, at an event in Moorsel on September 24. Organized by Marnixring Aalst Denderend Land and Iwein van Aalst, the evening will feature a lecture and a three-course dinner.
Criekemans argues that Europe is at a geopolitical turning point as traditional pillars of stability—such as cheap Russian energy, relative peace at its borders, the Chinese market, and the American security umbrella—are eroding. He suggests that Europe must urgently develop a cohesive strategy to maintain its global influence and avoid being played against one another by other major powers.
The professor advocates for a ‘hyperrealist’ approach, meaning Europe must redefine itself geo-economically, geostrategically, and geopolitically. While maintaining democratic values, he emphasizes the necessity of investing heavily in defense, technology, and economic competitiveness to secure its future and social contract.
