Professor highlights plastic pollution at Konyaaltı Beach
Professor Mehmet Gökoğlu, a faculty member at Akdeniz University's Faculty of Fisheries, has highlighted the severe plastic pollution at Antalya's Konyaaltı Beach. During recent dives, Gökoğlu collected various types of waste, including cigarette butts, plastic cups, wet wipes, and even clothing, threading them onto a bottle to create a 'skewer' of trash to demonstrate the scale of the problem.
Gökoğlu warned that plastic waste becomes trapped among rocks on the seabed. He explained that as waves hit these rocks, they act like a 'microplastic grinding machine,' breaking down larger plastic items into microplastics over time. He called for increased public awareness and sensitivity regarding waste disposal to protect the internationally renowned beach.
