Professor Mesagan calls for unique African energy transition model
Professor Ekundayo Peter Mesagan of Pan-Atlantic University has argued that Africa requires a unique energy transition strategy that prioritizes economic growth and energy access over the European model of rapid fossil fuel reduction.
During his 26th inaugural lecture at the Lagos Business School, Mesagan addressed the tension between global environmental sustainability goals and the economic needs of oil-producing and energy-deficient nations. He noted that the transition is complicated by technological limitations and the high costs of deploying alternative energy systems.
Mesagan emphasized that fossil fuels are likely to remain a significant part of the global energy mix for the foreseeable future. He questioned how developing countries, which often rely on oil revenues to fund infrastructure and development, can navigate the shift toward cleaner energy without compromising their economic stability.
