Professor shares five tips to support victims of partner violence

Marieke Liem, a professor of Safety and Intervention Studies at Leiden University, has released research findings aimed at helping bystanders support individuals in unsafe relationships. The study, conducted for the Femicide Monitor, involved interviews with dozens of victims of severe partner violence.

Research indicates that it often takes more than 30 incidents before a victim seeks professional help. Because acquaintances, such as neighbors, friends, colleagues, and family members, often recognize patterns of coercive control earlier than the victim, they play a crucial role in intervention.

Liem provides five key recommendations for those wishing to help: 1. Initiate a conversation to acknowledge the situation. 2. Avoid judging the individual. 3. Provide practical support. 4. Maintain consistent contact. 5. Allow the victim to maintain control over their own decisions.
