Professor Ugo Boggi moves from Pisa to Policlinico Gemelli

Professor Ugo Boggi, a prominent specialist in general surgery and organ transplantation, is moving from the University of Pisa to the Policlinico Gemelli in Rome. Starting in September, Boggi will serve as a Full Professor of General Surgery at the Catholic University and Director of the Unit of General Surgery and Organ Transplantation at the Fondazione Policlinico Gemelli IRCCS.

His appointment is part of the Gemelli Foundation’s strategic plan to prioritize high-complexity oncological surgery, technological innovation, and advanced transplantology, including liver, kidney, pancreas, intestinal, and xenotransplantation research, as well as robotic surgery. Boggi, who has performed approximately 1,500 transplants, is a highly decorated surgeon with international training.

In Pisa, local political representatives have expressed concern over his departure, characterizing it as a significant loss for the region’s medical excellence. They noted that Boggi played a crucial role in establishing Pisa as an international reference point for robotic surgery and transplantation, questioning the ability of the Tuscan healthcare system to retain top-tier talent.
