The tradition originated in Russia, initiated by Valentin Balt and Michael Cherviakov of Parallel Technologies in 2002. They campaigned for official recognition, which was granted in 2009 when then-President Dmitry Medvedev signed the decree establishing it as a professional holiday. The observance has since been adopted by the global technology community to recognize the contributions of software developers, coders, and system architects who maintain modern digital infrastructure.
