Progress and Socialism Party expands parliamentary group to 22 members

The Progress and Socialism Party (PPS) has officially increased its parliamentary group to 22 members following political agreements to include three female MPs from other parties. This expansion brings the group back to the size it held after the 2021 legislative elections.

The new members include Hanan Zemizem from the New Democrats Party and two representatives from the Democratic Forces Front. By reaching 22 members, the PPS has surpassed the legal quorum of 20 required to form an independent parliamentary group, granting the party greater institutional influence within the House of Representatives, particularly regarding committee representation and legislative oversight.

These shifts have altered the landscape of small-party alliances. A previously planned joint parliamentary group named ‘Democratic Option,’ which was expected to consist of four parties with six seats, has been disrupted because the departure of these three members leaves the remaining members below the minimum requirement of four to form a group. This development occurs as Morocco prepares for the new 2026-2031 legislative term and ongoing consultations regarding the formation of a government led by Fatima Zahra Mansouri.
