Progressive Candidates Backed by NYC Mayor Win Three Democratic Primaries in New York

Three progressive candidates endorsed by New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani won Democratic primaries for U.S. House seats on Tuesday, unseating two incumbents and capturing an open district.

Brad Lander defeated Dan Goldman in the 10th district, which covers lower Manhattan and parts of Brooklyn. Darializa Avila Chevalier beat Adriano Espaillat in the 13th district, encompassing upper Manhattan and sections of the Bronx. Claire Valdez won the open race in the 7th district, representing neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens.

The victories give the progressive wing greater leverage over fiscal policy debates in Congress, including potential wealth‑tax measures, tighter banking regulation and oversight of crypto assets. Analysts note the changes could affect future votes on the federal debt ceiling, budget priorities and financial‑sector legislation.
