Hlas-SD proposes constitutional change for early elections via referendum

The Hlas-SD coalition party has submitted a proposal to the National Council of the Slovak Republic to amend the Constitution. The amendment would allow citizens to terminate the current electoral term early through a valid referendum.

National Council Speaker Richard Raši stated that the proposal is a standalone amendment designed to be “absolutely clean,” focusing solely on the ability to shorten the electoral period. To prevent political abuse, the proposal includes several safeguards. For instance, a petition to call such a referendum must be submitted to the President within six months of obtaining the first signature. Additionally, a referendum could not be held during the first or last year of an electoral term.

As an amendment to the Constitution, the proposal requires at least 90 votes for passage. Since the governing coalition does not hold this number independently, Hlas-SD will need support from opposition parties to succeed.
