Progresívne Slovensko calls for removal of Deputy Speaker Tibor Gašpar
The opposition movement Progresívne Slovensko (PS) has renewed its calls for Tibor Gašpar, the Deputy Speaker of the National Council of the Slovak Republic, to resign from his position. Gašpar, a member of Smer-SD, is currently facing indictment in the ‘Očistec’ case involving serious corruption allegations.
PS has announced plans to initiate a parliamentary vote to remove Gašpar from his post in September. Additionally, the party has proposed a constitutional amendment that would prohibit members of parliament indicted for corruption or crimes committed by public officials from serving as the Speaker or Deputy Speaker of the National Council.
MP Zuzana Mesterová stated that it is unacceptable for an individual facing such serious charges—where witnesses have alleged the manipulation of judicial decisions and investigations—to represent one of the state’s highest institutions. She further criticized the use of parliamentary premises for legal defenses and expressed concern over the ruling coalition's ability to alter criminal policy for its own benefit.
