ProÁguas water security program requires $4 billion investment
The implementation of the National Water Security Program (ProÁguas) for the 2026-2036 period requires an investment of $4 billion. Currently, only $750 million is available, with the remaining funds being mobilized through various partners, according to Fernando Rafael, the Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources.
Minister Rafael emphasized that securing this funding is essential to expand and improve water supply and sanitation services, reduce water loss, and strengthen national water security. He also called for increased collaboration and coordination among institutions operating within the water and sanitation sectors.
Under the 2025 Economic and Social Plan and State Budget (PESOE), the Ministry programmed 54 actions. Recent evaluations show a global average performance of 62%, with 34 of 62 indicators fully met. Achievements include the construction of 44 rural water supply systems and 500 water sources, as well as 10,743 domestic water connections in urban areas, benefiting approximately 197,400 people.
