Prolonged Sitting Increases Risk of Leg Vein Damage and Chronic Pain
Spending many hours seated, especially while working from home, can impair circulation in the legs. Lack of calf muscle activity prevents the natural “muscle pump” that returns blood to the heart, leading to blood pooling, swelling, and eventually chronic venous insufficiency or deep‑vein thrombosis, a serious medical emergency.
Extended sitting also compresses lumbar, pelvic and gluteal structures, triggering conditions such as piriformis syndrome, pudendal nerve irritation, coccygeal pain and cluneal nerve discomfort. These issues often manifest as persistent lower‑back, hip or thigh pain that eases when the person stands up.
Health professionals advise regular movement breaks every 30–40 minutes, ergonomic chair adjustments, proper foot support and the use of cushions to reduce pressure. When symptoms persist, medical evaluation, physiotherapy and targeted strengthening are recommended to address the underlying cause and prevent long‑term complications.
