Prolonged Sitting Increases Risks to Sexual Function and Cancer

Health experts warn that extended periods of sitting and poor posture can weaken pelvic floor muscles, reducing blood flow to the penis and leading to weaker erections, urinary discomfort, lower energy and diminished libido. Dr. Jeff Foster recommends maintaining a neutral spine, keeping screens at eye level, feet flat on the floor and taking regular breaks with light activity to support pelvic health.

A separate study published in PLOS Medicine found that each additional hour of continuous sitting raises the risk of cancer‑related death by about 9 %. The research linked prolonged, uninterrupted sitting to higher incidence of cancers of the esophagus, liver, kidney, pancreas, colon, breast, ovary and thyroid. Replacing one hour of nonstop sitting with light activity lowered the risk of cancer death by roughly 12 %. The analysis, based on UK Biobank data, notes the findings are observational and do not prove causation, but suggest metabolic benefits from breaking up sedentary time.
