Prolonged Sitting Increases Thrombosis Risk and Triggers Leg Swelling, Experts Recommend Frequent Movement
Medical specialists warn that remaining seated or standing for many hours without moving reduces calf muscle activity, which normally pumps blood back to the heart. Vascular surgeon Wesley Lemos explains that this prolonged immobility raises the risk of deep‑vein thrombosis, especially for workers who stay in the same posture for eight‑hour shifts. He urges regular short breaks to walk, stretch the legs and stimulate circulation, noting that the same principle applies to people who work on their feet without movement.
Travel-related leg swelling is also linked to the same lack of movement, compounded by dehydration and high‑salt intake during long trips. Mayra Moraes advises travelers to stay well‑hydrated, choose low‑salt foods, wear comfortable clothing, and frequently flex ankles and feet, as well as stand up and walk whenever possible. After arriving, light walking, leg elevation and continued hydration can reduce swelling and discomfort.
