Promise to America centrist pledge expands to more state lawmakers
A centrist movement known as ‘Promise to America’ is expanding its reach among state-level legislators. Six additional state lawmakers, including Maryland Senate Majority Whip Joanne C. Benson, have signed the pledge. The initiative, led by Representatives Tom Suozzi and Adam Gray, calls for common-ground solutions focused on capitalism, safety, fiscal responsibility, and effective government. Organizers stated they intend to roll out the pledge to all 50 states by Election Day, shifting focus from Washington to state and local officials.
Despite this expansion, the movement faces internal party challenges. While the pledge seeks to promote bipartisanship and moderate values, it has faced criticism from progressive factions, including the Democratic Socialists of America. Observers note a growing divide within the Democratic Party, as socialist-aligned candidates gain momentum in various local and primary elections, contrasting with the relatively low number of House Democrats currently signed onto the centrist pledge.
