Pronacej transfers 41 high-risk youths from Trujillo to Lima

The National Program of Juvenile Centers (Pronacej) has transferred 41 high-risk youths from the Trujillo juvenile center, known as La Floresta, to a diagnostic and rehabilitation center in Lima. The decision was prompted by the inmates' repeated violent behavior and the critical overcrowding at the Trujillo facility.

The Trujillo center is currently facing an emergency due to severe overpopulation, housing 251 adolescents despite a capacity of only 106. Authorities noted that this overcrowding, which exceeds capacity by approximately 136%, creates a risk of “criminogenic contagion” and negative influence among inmates.

The transferred individuals are involved in serious offenses, including extortion, homicide, aggravated robbery, drug trafficking, and illegal possession of weapons and explosives. Luis Vega, executive director of Pronacej, stated that the move aims to strengthen order, control, and the rehabilitation process through more intensive treatment in a controlled environment.
