Péroncel-Hugoz, influential journalist and literary editor, passes away
Journalist and writer Péroncel-Hugoz has passed away, leaving a legacy as a prominent observer of the Arab world and a dedicated supporter of Francophone literature. During his tenure at Le Monde under Hubert Beuve-Méry, Hugoz served as a correspondent in Algeria, Cairo, and Lebanon.
In Egypt, his reporting on the Muslim Brotherhood's influence within President Sadat's military led to his expulsion shortly before the president's assassination. His career was defined by a blend of travel writing and political commentary, often defending Eastern Christians and critiquing Islamist fundamentalism. In his essay ‘Le Radeau de Mahomet’, he addressed the dangers of fundamentalism and Western complicity.
As an editor and columnist, Hugoz spent fifteen years managing a section dedicated to Francophonie. He was noted for his ability to identify literary talent, early on recognizing the potential of authors such as Tahar Ben Jelloun and Mohamed Kacimi. His published works include ‘Villes du Sud’, ‘Traversées de la France’, ‘Fil rouge portugais’, and ‘Petit Journal lusitan’.
