Poland implements new waste management and recycling measures

Poland is navigating significant shifts in waste management and recycling regulations. One year after the launch of the national deposit system, the Ministry of Climate and Environment is considering expanding the program to include small glass alcohol bottles and extending the validity of deposit vouchers from 30 to 90 days to benefit consumers.

While the system has increased collection rates, it faces challenges. Beverage producers are facing rising debt, with overdue obligations exceeding 109 million PLN as of August 2026. Additionally, the European Union is implementing new mandates requiring PET bottles to contain at least 25% recycled plastic (rPET), which may alter the visual appearance of packaging.

On a local level, cities like Płock are implementing RFID technology to chip waste containers. This system uses GPS and unique identifiers to track collections and improve segregation monitoring, though some property managers express concerns regarding its ability to prevent illegal dumping by outsiders. Meanwhile, residents are being reminded to properly dispose of hazardous materials like batteries, paints, and electronics to prevent environmental damage.
