Proper nectar preparation for hummingbird feeders

To properly feed hummingbirds, the recommended nectar solution is a mixture of refined white sugar and water using a 1:4 ratio (one part sugar to four parts water). This specific concentration most closely mimics the natural sucrose content found in flower nectar.

It is critical to avoid using honey, brown sugar, artificial sweeteners, or food coloring, as these substances can be harmful to the birds' delicate systems. Using clean or filtered water is preferred to ensure purity.

Providing chilled sugar water can be beneficial as it helps slow the growth of bacteria and mold, thereby reducing spoilage. Keeping the nectar cool can also extend its freshness and may slightly discourage bees and wasps from frequenting the feeder.
