Proper Wine Cooling Temperatures for Summer Gatherings
Serving wine at the right temperature greatly influences its aroma, acidity, tannins and overall balance. Expert Miroslav Majer of Znovín Znojmo explains that the common belief that white wine should be ice‑cold and red wine served at room temperature is outdated. Modern indoor temperatures often exceed 25 °C, which can mute the freshness of red wines and accentuate alcohol.
For optimal enjoyment, sparkling wines are best at 6‑8 °C, light whites at 8‑10 °C, fuller whites at 10‑12 °C, and rosé at 8‑10 °C. Light‑bodied reds benefit from 14‑16 °C, while more structured reds develop best at 16‑18 °C. Adjustments can also be made based on grape variety, such as serving Sauvignon Blanc around 8‑10 °C or oak‑aged Chardonnay at 12‑14 °C. Simple methods like using an ice bucket with water can quickly bring a bottle to the desired temperature without compromising its character.
