Tax Administration clarifies real estate tax warnings in Croatia

The Croatian Tax Administration has issued a statement regarding warnings sent to citizens for unpaid real estate taxes. The administration clarified that these warnings are based on correctly established and recorded tax obligations, noting that any discrepancies reported in the media are isolated individual cases.

The Tax Administration confirmed it has processed all received objections and appeals regarding real estate tax decisions within two months of receipt. For appeals that were accepted, the established tax obligations were canceled, exempting those individuals from the initial tax decisions. Appeals that did not meet the requirements for acceptance at the first instance will be forwarded to the competent second-instance body by September 15.

Crucially, the administration emphasized that filing an objection or appeal does not postpone the execution of the tax decision. Taxpayers may be required to settle the obligation while the appeal process is ongoing. If a subsequent procedure determines that the tax obligation was incorrect or should have been lower, the tax-accounting status will be adjusted, and any overpaid amounts will be refunded.
