Prophet Samuel and the transition of Israelite leadership
The prophet Samuel, the fifteenth and final judge of Israel, is commemorated for his role in Israelite history. Born to Elkanah and Hannah, Samuel received his first revelation from God at age twelve and later led the Israelites to victory against the Philistines.
Despite Samuel's warnings that God was the true king of Israel, the people demanded a human monarch to lead them and fight their battles, seeking to be like other nations. Following this request, Samuel anointed Saul, son of Kish, as the first king of Israel, and later anointed David, son of Jesse, as the second ruler.
