Dominican Republic courts advance Naco attack trial and feminicide case

In the Dominican Republic, two separate criminal cases have reached significant judicial milestones in the Distrito Nacional.

A trial has been scheduled for October 13 for Jean Andrés Pumarol Fernández regarding a violent attack in the Naco sector. The incident resulted in the death of 70-year-old Yolanda Handal Abugabir and left five others injured, including the defendant's father. Pumarol Fernández faces charges including homicide, murder, and illegal use of weapons. He is currently serving three months of preventive detention.

In a separate case, Florencio Lorenzo Lorenzo has been ordered to serve three months of preventive detention for the attempted aggravated feminicide of his former partner, Yaritza Sosa. The incident occurred in the Los Guandules sector during a dispute over mobile phone access. Prosecutors allege that Lorenzo Lorenzo attacked Sosa with a hammer and attempted to strangle her using a cloth soaked in formaldehyde. Police intervention during the attack led to his arrest in flagrante delicto, and authorities seized a machete and a coffin from his vehicle.
