Prosecutor seeks community service for driver in fatal A6 collision
A 37-year-old man from Koudekerk aan den Rijn faces a requested 120-hour community service sentence and a six-month driving ban following a serious accident on the A6 motorway near Almere.
The incident occurred on September 6, 2024, when three swans landed on the highway, causing a driver to stop his vehicle to avoid a collision. While the driver had activated his hazard lights and used his brakes to warn oncoming traffic, he failed to notice a following vehicle approaching at approximately 120 kilometers per hour in a 100 kilometer per hour zone.
The collision resulted in the victim suffering a permanent spinal cord injury, leaving them paralyzed and reliant on a wheelchair. While investigations showed the driver was not using a mobile phone at the time of the crash, the prosecution noted he was traveling above the speed limit and failed to contact the victim immediately following the accident.
