Prosecutors seek prison terms for 9 in CHP convention case

Prosecutors have requested prison sentences of 1 to 3 years for nine defendants in a case concerning the 38th Ordinary Convention of the Republican People's Party (CHP). The investigation, conducted by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, alleges voting manipulation and violations of the Political Parties Law during the November 2023 convention.

The indictment claims that various benefits were offered to delegates to influence the election of Özgür Özel as general leader. These allegations include the distribution of market cards, cash, mobile phones, and tablets, as well as promises of employment. Additionally, it is alleged that the second round of voting was delayed through misinformation.

Among the defendants are Ekrem İmamoğlu, Rıza Akpolat, and Özgür Çelik. While prosecutors seek punishment for nine individuals for participating in the crime, they have requested the acquittal of Cemil Tugay, Hüseyin Yaşar, and Özgen Nama due to insufficient evidence of involvement. The case is being heard at the Ankara 26th Criminal Court of First Instance.
