Prosecutors decline death penalty for Nick Reiner in parents' murder case

Prosecutors in Los Angeles have announced they will not seek the death penalty against 33-year-old Nick Reiner, the son of American director Rob Reiner. Reiner is accused of the December stabbings of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, at their Los Angeles home.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman stated that the decision followed a thorough review of aggravating and mitigating factors. The District Attorney’s office noted that the siblings of the accused, Jake and Romy Reiner, were consulted and made their views regarding the death penalty clear to prosecutors. The siblings have also requested that grand jury transcripts remain sealed to prevent further trauma.

Nick Reiner has pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder. If convicted, the maximum sentence he could face is life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. The next court hearing is scheduled for October 7.
