Prosecutors seek life sentence for couple in child abuse death
Prosecutors in South Korea have requested severe sentences for a couple in their 30s accused of the habitual abuse and death of their two-year-old daughter in Daejeon.
During a final hearing at the Daejeon District Court, prosecutors requested a life sentence for the father and 15 years in prison for the mother. The prosecution also requested that both individuals complete 80 hours of child abuse treatment programs and face a 10-year ban from employment at institutions related to children and youth.
According to the investigation, the child, who was born prematurely and had a history of intensive care, was subjected to repeated physical violence starting around October 2024. An autopsy revealed skull and rib fractures, as well as signs of malnutrition. On the day before her death, the couple reportedly fed the child spicy sauce and later gave her soju (liquor) in a medicine bottle, claiming it was to aid blood circulation. Medical experts suggested the alcohol consumption may have exacerbated the child's respiratory difficulties.
The father claimed his actions were driven by stress, while the mother stated the spicy sauce was intended to stimulate the child's appetite. Defense attorneys argued the couple faced extreme economic and physical hardships while raising four children without support. The court is scheduled to deliver its verdict on November 22.
