Prosopagnosia: Understanding the neurological disorder known as face blindness

Prosopagnosia, commonly known as face blindness, is a neurological condition that impairs a person's ability to recognize faces, even those of close friends or family members. While individuals with the condition can typically see clearly, read, and identify objects, their brains struggle to link specific facial features to a known identity.

Symptoms vary depending on the severity. Some individuals can distinguish eyes, noses, and mouths but cannot synthesize them into a recognizable person. In more advanced cases, known as autoprosopagnosia, individuals may even struggle to recognize their own faces in mirrors or photographs. To compensate, many rely on non-facial cues such as voice, hairstyle, clothing, or gait.

The condition is categorized into two main types: developmental (congenital), which is present from childhood, and acquired, which results from brain damage to areas such as the fusiform gyrus. Actor Brad Pitt has publicly discussed his suspicion of having the condition.
