Prospect Park to host Battle of Brooklyn 250th anniversary reenactment

Prospect Park will host a historical reenactment of the Battle of Brooklyn on Saturday, August 22, to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the engagement. The event is part of ‘Brooklyn 250’, a borough-wide series of free commemorations organized by six cultural institutions, including the Prospect Park Alliance and Green-Wood Cemetery.

The reenactment is scheduled to run from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., with participants marching from the Long Meadow toward The Old Stone House. A separate reenactment will be held at Green-Wood Cemetery on Sunday.

Fought in August 1776, the Battle of Brooklyn was the first major battle of the American Revolution in the area. Led by General William Alexander, Lord Stirling, approximately 400 soldiers fought against a much larger British force. While the British ultimately won the battle, the resistance allowed George Washington and the Continental Army to retreat across the East River, preserving the revolution.
