Prospect-UK study seeks 250,000 volunteers to study rising bowel cancer in young adults
Researchers from King’s College London and the health science company Zoe have launched Prospect-UK, a major study seeking 250,000 volunteers aged 18 to 50 to investigate the rising rates of bowel cancer in young adults.
While bowel cancer has historically affected older populations, recent data indicates that colorectal cancer is the only cancer increasing in younger adults faster than in older adults. The UK has experienced one of the steepest rises in early-onset cases globally since 1990. While the exact causes remain unknown, factors such as obesity, diet, and environmental changes are suspected contributors.
Participants in the study will complete online surveys regarding their diet, lifestyle, and environment, and will link their responses to electronic health records. A smaller subgroup will provide blood and stool samples alongside detailed dietary diaries. The goal is to gather large-scale, long-term data to identify specific risk factors and preventative measures. Experts note that many cases may be preventable through lifestyle adjustments, such as increasing fiber intake and reducing processed meat consumption.
