Prostate Cancer Awareness Month emphasizes early screening
September marks Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, highlighting the importance of early detection through screening. Medical professionals and survivors emphasize that men, particularly those aged 35 and older or those with a family history of the disease, should consider screening via a PSA (prostate-specific antigen) blood test.
Early detection is critical for survival; when caught in its early stages, the five-year survival rate for prostate cancer is over 98%. Common symptoms to monitor include urinary frequency, weak or interrupted urine flow, difficulty starting urination, bladder control issues, and pain or burning during urination or ejaculation. If the cancer progresses to advanced or metastatic stages, symptoms may include persistent bone pain in the hips or back, incontinence, unexplained weight loss, and swelling in the legs.
