Prostate cancer awareness month highlights screening and imaging advances

September marks Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, highlighting the importance of early detection and personalized medical approaches. According to the American Cancer Society, new prostate cancer cases increased by 3% annually between 2014 and 2022, with a notable rise in advanced-stage diagnoses. Projections for 2026 estimate 333,830 new cases and 36,320 deaths in the United States.

Medical advancements, such as PSMA PET/CT imaging, are providing physicians with more detailed views of the disease. By using a specialized tracer that targets the prostate-specific membrane antigen, these scans help determine if cancer is confined to the prostate or has spread to lymph nodes, bones, or soft tissues. This precision allows for more tailored treatment plans.

Risk factors include age, with risk rising after 50, and ethnicity, as Black and Caribbean men face higher risks. Black men are nearly 70% more likely to be diagnosed and twice as likely to die from the disease compared to White men. Health experts recommend that men at average risk discuss screening with doctors at age 50, while high-risk individuals should begin these discussions at age 45.
