Prostate cancer research and screening advances focus on early detection
Advances in genomic technologies and screening methods are improving the management and detection of prostate cancer. In India, DSS Takara Bio India is providing molecular profiling, transcriptomics, and low-input sequencing workflows to help researchers understand the heterogeneity of the disease and why certain tumors become aggressive or metastatic.
Early detection remains a critical factor in survival rates, which can exceed 99% if the cancer is caught before spreading. While the Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test is a primary screening tool, medical professionals emphasize that an elevated PSA level is not a definitive cancer diagnosis. Factors such as age, medical history, inflammation, and infection can also influence PSA levels.
Modern diagnostic approaches now incorporate advanced molecular testing and imaging to more precisely evaluate risk. This helps clinicians determine whether a patient requires a biopsy or is a candidate for active surveillance. Risk factors for the disease include age (particularly 65 and older), family history, and race, with Black men being more likely to develop the condition.
