Prostate cancer research highlights shifts in treatment and surveillance
Recent medical research highlights evolving approaches to prostate cancer management, focusing on both treatment prediction and surveillance trends. A study led by the UCLA Health Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center suggests that traditional indicators of aggressive tumors may not accurately predict which patients will benefit most from adding hormone therapy to radiation treatment. This finding is significant because while hormone therapy can improve outcomes, it carries side effects such as bone strength loss, metabolic changes, and sexual dysfunction.
Separately, research involving over 73,000 veterans shows a significant shift toward active surveillance for low-risk prostate cancer. According to a study published in JAMA, 93% of veterans with low-risk diagnoses opted for monitoring through regular tests in 2024, a substantial increase from 27% in 2005. The rate of active surveillance for patients with favorable intermediate risk also rose from 14% in 2005 to 61% in 2024. Active surveillance involves regular PSA blood tests, MRIs, and biopsies to monitor growth while avoiding the immediate side effects of surgery or radiation.
