Prostate cancer treatment advances through robotic surgery and new diagnostics
Advancements in medical technology and diagnostic precision are improving the management of prostate cancer. Brazilian urologist Dr. André Berger, based in Los Angeles, is recognized as a pioneer in using robotic surgery for urological tumors. He is actively involved in research, teaching, and working with Brazilian physicians to expand the use of robotic techniques in Brazil.
In Brazil, the National Cancer Institute (INCA) estimates that prostate cancer remains the most frequent cancer among men, with approximately 77,920 new cases expected annually during the 2026–2028 period. While traditional screening methods like PSA blood tests and digital rectal exams serve as initial filters, newer tools such as the Prostate Health Index (PHI) are helping to refine risk assessment and guide biopsies and treatments.
Medical professionals note that cultural barriers, including fear and stigma surrounding physical examinations, often prevent men from seeking early diagnosis. Early detection remains the most critical factor in increasing cure rates and controlling the disease.
