Prostate enlargement treated with green laser surgery in Taiwan

A 68-year-old man was treated for acute urinary retention caused by severe prostate enlargement at China Medical University Hsinchu Hospital. The patient's prostate had grown to 136 grams, approximately five to seven times the normal size, causing it to protrude into the bladder and thicken the bladder wall.

Urologist Tsai Cheng-yen performed a green laser prostate vaporization surgery, a three-hour procedure that uses high-energy lasers to remove enlarged tissue. The surgery resulted in significantly improved urinary flow, and the patient was discharged three days after the procedure. Doctors noted that delaying treatment for such symptoms can lead to urinary tract infections, bladder stones, and impaired kidney function.

Medical professionals advise that symptoms such as weak urinary stream, difficulty urinating, or increased frequency should not be dismissed as mere aging, as early intervention can prevent long-term damage to the bladder and kidneys.
