Prostate issues increase nocturnal fall and fracture risks

Frequent nighttime urination, known as nocturia, can significantly increase the risk of falls and fractures in men suffering from prostatitis or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). This condition, often affecting men over the age of 40, causes urinary obstructions that lead to multiple trips to the bathroom during the night.

Dr. Adrián Gutiérrez González, director of the Neurourology and Urodynamics Program at the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, notes that these nocturnal awakenings force older adults to walk in darkness with diminished balance. This risk is compounded by age-related decreases in bone quality. Research indicates that men with nocturia face a 1, 2, and 1.3 times higher risk of falls and fractures, respectively, compared to those without the symptom.

To address these health concerns, the educational digital platform ‘Hablemos de la Próstata’ has been developed to provide information on prostate care and the mechanics of conditions like BPH and prostatitis.
