Protección Civil warns of dangers in driving through flooded roads

Protección Civil has issued a warning regarding the dangers of driving through flooded roads during torrential rains. Authorities emphasize that water covering a roadway can be deceptive, as it may hide sinkholes, uneven surfaces, or damage caused by currents.

Even if the road surface remains intact, the lateral force of moving water can displace a vehicle and cause a loss of control. A critical safety threshold is reached when water covers approximately half the height of the wheels; at this point, a vehicle can begin to float regardless of its weight, model, or traction system.

To prevent accidents, loss of traction, or engine damage, Protección Civil advises drivers to avoid crossing flooded areas with active currents rather than attempting to estimate the water depth visually.
