Protein and gut microbiota trends show rising focus on holistic health

New market data and scientific research indicate a shift in how protein and gut health are perceived, moving beyond muscle recovery toward broader wellness and aging prevention.

In Asia, product launches featuring protein with health claims related to gut health, immunity, and skin health saw significant growth between 2021 and 2025. According to Innova Market Insights, gut health claims rose from 13% to 23%, immunity claims from 16% to 22%, and skin health claims from 12% to 18%. While traditional sources like eggs, dairy, and meat remain dominant, snacks led new protein-related launches at 17%, followed by dairy and infant nutrition. Companies are increasingly exploring diverse sources such as collagen, yeast, fungi, and plant-animal protein blends.

Complementing these market trends, scientific research is exploring the connection between the gut microbiota and muscle function. Studies, including research published in Gut, suggest that certain bacteria, such as Roseburia inulinivorans, may be associated with better muscle function indicators in humans. Experts note that the gut ecosystem plays a critical role in metabolic and immune processes, which may offer new pathways for managing muscle health during the aging process.
