Protein consumption becomes mainstream health metric in India
Protein consumption has transitioned from a niche concern for bodybuilders to a mainstream health metric in India. Food brands are increasingly marketing protein-fortified products, such as bread, cookies, and snacks, to a broader demographic including parents and office workers. This shift is driven by social media influence, fitness creators, and the availability of nutritional data through apps and wearables.
Experts caution against several misconceptions regarding protein intake. While protein is essential for muscle repair, consuming amounts significantly above 1.6g per kilogram of body weight does not necessarily lead to increased muscle mass. Additionally, nutritionists emphasize that Indian vegetarian diets, utilizing pulses, dairy, legumes, and soy, can provide adequate protein and essential amino acids, countering the myth that high protein intake requires meat-based sources.
