Protein consumption risks for adults over 40
Health experts warn that excessive protein consumption, often driven by viral trends and the fear of sarcopenia (muscle loss), can lead to unintended health consequences for adults over 40.
While postmenopausal women and men over 50 may require slightly higher intake—approximately 0.75 to 1 gram per kilogram of body weight—exceeding these amounts offers no additional benefit. Instead, excess protein calories can be stored as fat, contributing to weight gain. Over-reliance on highly processed protein bars and shakes is also discouraged, as these products are often high in sweeteners and lack essential dietary fiber, which is crucial for managing inflammation and lipid profiles in middle age.
Nutritionists recommend prioritizing whole foods, such as whole-grain bread with legumes or homemade smoothies, over supplements. Additionally, timing matters; consuming protein within two hours after exercise is more effective for muscle repair than random consumption throughout the day.
