Protein deficiency persists in elderly woman despite daily milk and tofu consumption

A 63-year-old woman, Ms. Truong, experienced a significant decrease in muscle mass and low serum albumin levels despite consuming milk and tofu daily for over six months. Although she believed these foods were sufficient to prevent muscle loss and immune decline, medical examinations revealed she was still suffering from protein deficiency.

Nutritionists explained that while milk and tofu are high-quality protein sources, relying on them exclusively creates a monotonous diet. Doctors noted that a lack of variety in amino acid profiles and accompanying nutrients can lead to a state of ‘supplementing but not enough.’ To maintain muscle mass, especially in middle-aged and elderly populations, a more diverse range of protein-rich foods is required.
