Protein intake for seniors at risk during summer heat

Health experts from Sanitas Mayores are warning that high summer temperatures can lead to insufficient protein intake among older adults. As appetite decreases, many seniors tend to rely heavily on light, cold meals such as gazpacho, fruit, and salads. While these options are hydrating, a diet based almost exclusively on them may lack the essential nutrients required to maintain muscle mass and strength.

Miriam Piqueras, medical director of Sanitas Mayores, noted that the goal is not necessarily to increase the quantity of food, but to ensure each meal has sufficient nutritional value. Insufficient protein can accelerate the loss of muscle mass, affecting mobility and hindering recovery from illnesses or hospitalizations.

To combat this, nutritionist Nuria Cañas suggests enriching cold summer dishes with protein sources such as boiled eggs, blue fish, chicken, legumes, fresh cheese, natural yogurt, or crushed nuts, depending on individual tolerance.
