Protein intake research challenges high-protein diet trends

Recent scientific research is challenging the popular trend of high-protein diets, particularly for sedentary individuals. A meta-analysis of over 350 studies, including work by researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, suggests that excessive protein intake may accelerate aging and increase the risk of diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular issues in those who do not engage in regular physical activity.

Researchers found that lower protein intake can activate biological processes associated with healthy aging. Specifically, reducing protein or certain amino acids may influence the FGF21 hormone, which helps regulate metabolism and reduce inflammation. In animal models, lower protein diets were linked to increased longevity. However, experts emphasize that protein remains essential for muscle maintenance and immunity, especially for those performing resistance training or pregnant women.

To avoid common pitfalls, nutritionists advise focusing on whole foods rather than highly processed items. Some products marketed as high-protein, such as certain meatballs, hot dogs, and imitation crab sticks, often contain high levels of starch, fats, and sodium. Instead, experts recommend lean meats, fish, eggs, and unprocessed tofu as reliable protein sources.
