Protein requirements and its impact on muscle recovery and sleep

Protein remains a vital nutrient for maintaining muscle mass, tissue repair, and immune system function, regardless of seasonal changes in activity levels. Even during summer months when structured exercise may decrease, the body still requires protein to support bones, skin, enzymes, and hormones.

Regarding nighttime consumption, protein can help manage hunger, which may otherwise interfere with the ability to relax or sleep. However, registered dietitian Johannah Katz notes that scientific research focuses more on muscle recovery and morning satiety rather than the immediate onset of sleep or the prevention of nighttime awakenings. The timing and type of protein consumed play critical roles in how it affects rest.
